Minister of Economic Development of Russia Maxim Reshetnikov had a meeting with Minister for Trade and Export Growth of New Zealand Damien Peter O'Connor via videoconference. The main topic of the meeting was the preparation for the APEC Trade Ministers' Meeting which is due on June 5, 2021.
The parties exchanged views on the key tasks of the forum this year. They identified restoration of trade and investment activity in the region after the pandemic as a priority.
In this context, special attention was paid to the issue of trade in medical goods and vaccines. Maxim Reshetnikov emphasized that economies must increase vaccine production and develop international production cooperation in this area. "It is important to create favorable conditions for investments involved in the creation of additional production facilities abroad," the minister noted.
During the meeting, the parties also discussed issues on the WTO negotiation agenda and reform of the organisation. The joint objective is to reach real agreements by the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference (30 November – 3 December 2021) on a number of areas, including fisheries subsidies.
The green agenda was addressed separately. Maxim Reshetnikov expressed concern about increasing trends towards "green protectionism". He also noted the importance of cooperative efforts to prevent the climate agenda from being used as a pretext to restrict trade.
At the end of the meeting, the sides expressed their willingness to maintain a constructive dialogue on the key areas of the international agenda.
